Abbas’s Journey with Karwan-e-Hayat

Abbas*, a patient struggling with substance addiction and debilitating psychotic symptoms caused by alcohol, cannabis, and LSD, found himself isolated from reality and unable to seek help on his own. His family made the courageous decision to admit him to Karwan-e-Hayat for treatment. Upon admission, a multidisciplinary team of doctors, psychiatrists, psychologists, and healthcare professionals from the institute was assembled to provide comprehensive care.

A crucial member of Abbas’s treatment team was a psychologist who built a strong therapeutic alliance with him, creating a safe space for him to share his experiences and fears. The first step was a psychological assessment to understand the underlying factors contributing to his addiction and psychosis, including past traumas and family dynamics.

Treatment involved individual therapy to address addiction, utilizing evidence-based approaches and motivational interviewing techniques. Simultaneously, the psychologist worked on managing Abbas’s psychotic symptoms using cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and prescribed appropriate medications. Group therapy within Karwan-e-Hayat provided a supportive network for Abbas to share experiences, learn from peers, and identify triggers related to substance use.

With dedication and support, Abbas gradually overcame his addiction and managed his psychotic symptoms. The Karwan team developed relapse prevention strategies and an aftercare plan to aid his transition back into the community. Abbas successfully completed the program, equipped with recovery skills and insights into his issues, enabling him to rebuild his life, mend relationships, and engage in healthy activities. He remained connected to support groups and continued therapy for ongoing well-being and growth.
